According to the recently published latest edition of the UK’s Competitiveness Index, the biggest improvement in the last two years was seen in North West part of England. Three cities contributed to such an impressive change – Salford, Liverpool and Manchester.

Out of 407 locations, both Salford and Liverpool have risen 44 places in the rankings, while Manchester has gone up by 24.

The UK’s Competitiveness Index takes certain factors into account to establish competitiveness; it looks at research and development expenditure, the amount of new businesses, percentage of people with high education degrees, exports per capita, productivity, employment rates and gross weekly pay.

According to the index, the North East region was least competitive and London remained the most.

Manchester has recently experienced dramatic increase in the amount of office space let. The figure is expected to top one million square feet by the end of the year 2008.
