‘Free offices’ scheme should boost small business in Glasgow

December 12th, 2007 by Jurga Galvan

Glasgow city council has recently introduced its initiative to offer small businesses two years of rent-free office accommodation in order to support start-up companies.

New enterprises will be offered the opportunity of occupying empty commercial premises owned by the council in the hopes that they will get their feet on the ground and become rent-paying tenants in the near future.

The decision has been made to address the considerably low survival rates among start up businesses in Glasgow. According to Glasgow City Council, the scheme would mean that nearly 50 currently empty commercial units will play a vital role in helping businesses to survive those difficult first years. It is announced that any new small business is entitled to apply for the scheme.

Is this also possible for people who want to open a shop business? Susan

    Thanks, Susan, for your comment.

The most up to date information could be provided by Glasgow City Council.

I have contacted GCC in connection with new scheme and seems they have a limited amount of industrial unit and shop type accommodation. The articles I have read all indicate that ‘office’ accommodation will be made available…. this it seems is not the case and was told that most GCC office space is already occupied by existing council services. I feel they have misrepresented the scope of new scheme… they do not have ‘offices’ only a very limited amount of commercial type properties. I would like to hear from anyone that does know of low/cost office accommodation in Glasgow that could house a small classroom type environment…. thank you…. David
